Bamboo Sculpture and Lanterns with Kassandra Bossell 2025EXPIRED

Create a sculptural form using bamboo and cane. Leave it as a sculpture or cover with paper to create a lantern.

Participants will be instructed with the simple techniques of assemblage, and construction in bamboo and cane. You may choose to cover the form with tissue paper, cellophane, or other textiles.

Lanterns may be left white or painted with subtle colours and patterns that create a coloured glow with internal lighting.

This easy, non-toxic process allows for the creation of any simple contained form e.g. animals, sea creatures or abstract shapes. Everyone works on their own project in their own time. No experience required.

Participants will be instructed in simple techniques of bamboo, cane and wire construction and covering with paper. Lanterns will be strung up to dry and then left white or painted.

By the end of the course the student will be able to

1. Construct a form using bamboo, cane and paper

2. Create a hanging mechanism for the lantern

3. Cover the form with paper soaked in glue to complete the form.

About Kassandra Bossell

Kassandra Bossell is a Sydney-based sculptor and installation artist whose work bridges art and environmental activism. With a Master of Fine Arts from UNSW and a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Sydney College of the Arts, she has exhibited extensively both in Australia and internationally, and her commissions include projects for the Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Museum, and the National Maritime Museum. Her work explores humanity’s connection with nature through themes of transformation and cycles of life, often drawing on ecological and cultural relationships. A committed educator and lifelong learner, Kassandra collaborates with scientists, artists, and communities to bring interactive, site-specific works to life, emphasising the human role in nature through a multidisciplinary approach.
