when: 14 - 25 August 2024 | venue: Art Space on The Concourse | cost: Free | address: 409 Victoria Avenue, Chatswood, 2067A solo exhibition by Ruth McDermott of textile and lighting related work, celebrating the dramatic yet fragile Icelandic landscape.
The creative rationale behind this project came from an arts residency in Iceland in 2022, when Dr Ruth McDermott travelled to the volcano (the black) and glacier (the white) areas. Using her expertise as a light artist and she will use light sources and textured textile (worked with heat and pressure to create the necessary patterns) to create a series of large-scale screens and three-dimensional works suspended works reflecting her experience of these landforms.
Dr Ruth McDermott is an installation artist working in the public realm driven by a passion for expressing ideas and telling stories. The inspiration for the work comes from a variety of areas but has a focus on the natural environment and is always centered on the creation of a coherent narrative and a rich experience for the viewer. Over the past 14 years, she has collaborated with lighting designer Ben Baxter on a series of public artworks for festivals and events. A book featuring their work, Between Dark and Light, was published by the University of Technology, Sydney ePress in August 2022. This exhibition 'Lost Terrains' represents an opportunity for her to move back to the role of a solo exhibiting artist exploring an issue which she considers of the highest importance in the current era – the fragility of our natural environment.
