when: 14 September 2024 | venue: Dendy Newtown | cost: Adult $20 | address: 261-263 King Street, Newtown NSW 2042Have you heard of George and Charis Schwarz? Coming up at the Sydney Underground Film Festival (SUFF) on Saturday 14th September at 4pm is a historical event with Leon O'Regan, a film historian, who has been painstakingly restoring the works George and Charis Schwarz.
Charis Schwarz, who along with her husband George, created a body of work that remains singular in Australian art history. Working in virtually all mediums and rubbing shoulders with the stars and the streets, their early '70s film productions have been unearthed and restored and ready to be screened to local Sydney audiences once again. Please note: this is a strictly 18+ event.
Filmed in and around Kings Cross between 1970 and 1975, Charis and George produced erotic films that broke box office records and had people lining up around the block to see their films. Some of their films miraculously passed strict classification laws and sometimes refused. Their films broke new ground at the time and remain unique and rarely seen documents of Kings Cross bohemian culture.
SUFF is screening this collection of rare works by George and Charis and Charis (a Darlinghurst local) is kindly going to take part in a Q&A after the screening, hosted by Jaimie Leonarder of Mu Meson Archives.
